Cambodia and Vietnam have decided to jump the gun on border demarcation and inaugurate the last border post this weekend, despite having another 28 of the 314 border posts still to be finalised. Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement yesterday detailing an inauguration ceremony for the final border post to be held on Sunday to mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Vietnam on June 24, 1967. This diplomatic relationship took a brief hiatus during the reign of the Khmer Rouge, who severed ties with Vietnam. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will preside over the inauguration, which will also be part of the Year 2012 Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship celebrations. Va Kimhong, senior minister in charge of the Cambodia Border Affairs Committee, told the Post yesterday that so far 286 of all 314 border posts have already been planted along the border that stretches for more than 1,000 kilometres between the two countries. He said the royal government plans to finish the process of planting all border posts by the end of this year if it is possible.
